It's that Apple Keynote time again

September: there’s pumpkin-spiced everything, everywhere. If you’re an Apple fan, chances are you’ve been keeping an eye on the rumour mill, trying to get a hint of what’s new for 2019. But the wait is finally over.

Here’s everything you need to know about the all-new iPhone lineup.

Introducing iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.  They’ll be available to pre-order on 13 September and all the pricing info will be available then too.

Following on from the success of last year’s iPhone XR – the most popular iPhone to date – Apple has announced iPhone 11. With a 6.1 inch Liquid Retina display; a brand-new design that comes in 6 new colours; and an amazing new A13 Bionic Chip (the fastest ever used in a smartphone).  It also features a new dual-camera system and has a battery life that beats the iPhone XR by 1 hour. Who knew that was even possible?

How much will iPhone 11 cost?

Three – They will be adding the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max (all colour variations) to its range. The handsets will be available to pre-order in Three stores and online at www.three.co.uk from Friday (13 September).

Vodafone – The new iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max and Apple Watch Series 5 are coming soon to Vodafone UK. They’ve also announced a “12 Month Upgrade Promise”, which means you can upgrade to any handset in 12 months’ time with no early upgrade fee. You can check out all the deals on the Vodafone website.

EE – They’ve confirmed the iPhone 11 and you can visit the EE website for more info. They look to be taking the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max too.

O2 – They never, ever contact us. In all of the 17+ years this site has been online, we’ve only ever had about 9 emails from their press people. Not sure what we’ve done to them, but they’re also ranging the iPhone 11 here. They’ll have the Pro version too.

iPhone 11 – how does it look?

We’re loving the design this year. There’s the perfect curves, glass, and aluminium body we’re used to, but the rear camera lenses are bigger than ever before and totally change the look. iPhone 11 comes in 6 different colours too: black, white, yellow, green, purple, and red.

iPhone 11 camera and video

It’s not just the look of the camera we’re excited about. There’s a new dual-camera system with 12MP wide and 12MP ultra-wide lenses. The ultra-wide lens gives you a 120-degree field of view, so you can capture even more of the scene. 4 times more to be precise. And all while standing in one spot.

And when it comes to video, you get 4k resolution and up to 60 frames per second. It’s the highest-quality video Apple has ever produced.

Night mode

Low-light photography with a smartphone can be tricky. Turning the flash on can help, but you sometimes end up overexposing the light areas and completely losing the shadows. And that doesn’t make for a pretty picture. But things are changing.

Enter Night mode.

Now you can capture perfectly detailed photos even in low light conditions. What’s more, it comes on automatically – so you don’t need to mess around, trying to find the right setting.

Portrait Mode’s better than ever

Portrait mode is one of our favourite iPhone features. Who doesn’t like being able to take effortless, professional-looking shots? And now, it works with pets too (as if your pup wasn’t Insta-perfect enough already).

QuickTake

With QuickTake, you can move seamlessly from snapping photos to taking video – just hold down the shutter button. It’s perfect for those moments when something impulsive happens and you just have to catch it in motion.

Let me take a slofie

Yep, you can now take a slo-mo selfie – a slofie if you will. So, get the fan or hairdryer out, get your Beyoncé on and take a slo-mo selfie.

Performance

The next generation A13 Bionic chip is the highest-performing, most efficient chip ever. It optimises CPU – that’s the Central Processing Unit – which means that iPhone 11 performs everything faster and can handle more stuff simultaneously than any other smartphone. And the same goes for the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). So the performance of video and graphics in the new iPhone is unbeatable and gives you higher resolution and less lagging when you’re gaming.

Battery

Last year’s iPhone XR became famous for having amazing battery life, and this year – thanks to the A13 Bionic chip – iPhone 11 lasts up to 1 hour longer than iPhone XR. Impressive stuff.

And when you do need to power up, you can get up to 50% charge in 30 minutes with fast-charge.

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max

Next up in Apple’s new lineup is the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Now, when Apple labels a device with ‘Pro’, we know they must’ve nailed it BIG time. Just look at iPad Pro, it’s second to none. And the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max aren’t going to disappoint either.

What does iPhone 11 Pro look like?

Both the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max share a stunning new design with a matte finish. They both come in the usual Space Grey, Silver and Gold colours we’re familiar with but this year, there’s the addition of Midnight Green too.

Both use the new Super Retina XDR display – the brightest, sharpest iPhone display ever. The 11 Pro comes in at 5.8 inches and the 11 Pro Max at 6.5 inches.

iPhone 11 Pro camera

The new triple lens camera is going to be hard to beat. With telephoto, wide, and ultra-wide lenses, Apple really have kicked things up a notch when it comes to photography. And all 3 cameras work together seamlessly, thanks to the A13 Bionic Chip. So you can take pro-looking shots every time.

The ultra-wide camera lets you capture up to 4 times more of the scene, just by zooming out. And with the new camera interface, you can see what’s happening outside of the frame too.

And if you’re taking a group selfie, there’s no need to look for the person with the longest arms to make sure everyone’s in the shot. Just rotate your iPhone, it’ll automatically zoom out, making room for everyone.

Smart HDR

Smart HDR is the feature that really brings your photos to life. It can tell the difference between your subject in the foreground and the scenery in the background. And it automatically adjusts and tweaks highlights and shadows ‘til everything’s perfect.

Video

Want the highest-quality video? With iPhone 11 Pro, you’ve got it. It shoots 4K video at 60 frames per second. That gives you a huge amount of detail and seriously smooth motion. You can use that awesome new ultra-wide camera with video too, letting you pan out to tell more of the story.

And with iOS 13 you can edit your videos there and then: cropping, rotating, adding filters – without needing to mess around with other devices. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s perfect if you’re a budding vlogger.

Performance

Like the iPhone 11, the 11 Pro uses that next generation A13 Bionic chip. It’s the fastest, most efficient chip Apple has ever produced, which again, makes for the fastest CPU and GPU on any smartphone, ever.

And talking of faster, Face ID is 30% quicker. It works at more angles and from further away too.

Battery

iPhone 11 Pro has 4 hours more battery life than iPhone XS. And iPhone 11 Pro Max has a whopping 5 hours more battery life than iPhone XS Max.

If you ever need extra juice, you can get up to 50% charge in just 30 minutes with fast-charge.

iOS 13

And there’s so much more to talk about… If you love all things Apple, here’s the lowdown on Apple tv+, Apple Arcade, and the latest features on the Apple Watch.

What is Apple Arcade?

Gamers get ready. The world’s first ever subscription mobile gaming service is here. And you can get it on all things Apple:  iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Apple Arcade is available exclusively in the App Store, and some of the world’s most innovative game developers have created original games especially for it. You also get editorial content, like personal recommendations, game guides, sneak peeks and more. It’s available from 19 Sept, with over 100 new games in the weeks to come. And the best bit? You can experience unlimited access for $4.99 (UK price to come), and a free 1-month trial when you get your new iPhone.

What is Apple tv+?

Apple tv+ is set to rival any subscription TV service out there, with new, and original content from the world’s bet storytellers. Along with exclusive originals, you get best movies, comedies, dramas, and kids’ shows. The first ones will be shown on 1 November and more will be added every month. Apple announced that it’s $4.99 a month at launch, but if you buy a new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV, you get a year’s free Apple tv+. Nice.

What’s new with iPad?

This year has seen a completely revamped iPad lineup with the new iPad mini through to the iPad Pro and the incredible iPad OS. But now, the 7th generation has arrived – with 100% recyclable casing (nice touch).

It has an even bigger 10.2” Retina display, with 3.5 million pixels – that’s 3 times more than the best-selling US laptop. And it’s two times faster than the top-selling PC. You get a 3.7x wider viewing angle and you can connect a full-sized smart keyboard that also folds into a protective cover.

Multi-tasking is easier than ever with a slide-over, or fan out feature that allows you to skip between stuff in a second. And if you want a 1-handed experience you’ll love the floating keyboard that appears onscreen.

On top of all this, you get a desktop-esque Safari browsing experience; a new video editing experience and enhanced photo app; new ways to use the Apple pencil; and of course, Apple Arcade, and Apple tv+.

Latest Apple Watch Series

The health benefits of the Apple Watch were a big focus at the announcement this year, and Apple featured some amazing stories of how this wearable tech has changed lives. It already helps with the early detection of atrial fibrillation, and with series 5, 3 new health studies are underway:

1. Apple Hearing Study that analyses sound exposure and how it influences hearing. So, it’ll warn you when things are too loud
2. Apple Women’s Health Study that studies menstrual cycles, fertility, osteoporosis, and other female-specific concerns.
3. Apple Heart and Movement study, which is aimed at improving overall health

Series 5 also includes a new Retina display that’s always-on and doesn’t go dark when you lower your wrist – perfect for sneaky peeks during those boring meetings. And an LTPO display (that’s Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxid, don’t you know?) which refreshes dynamically and is super-efficient.

The new Apple Watch has the same all-day 18-hour battery life you get in the last version, but now brings a built-in compass, International emergency calling in over 150 countries. And loads more.
