Lockdown means that shopping for Christmas decorations is a little bit harder this year. But no need to fear – you can make some truly epic decorations from the comfort of your own home, and do a bit of recycling in the process.
Here are some of our favourite festive ideas:
Plastic spoon snowman
Grab a plastic spoon, some coloured felt and a mini plant pot and you’ve got yourself a little snowman. Check out this how-to from Crafts by Amanda for instructions. These snowmen work great as placeholders for the dining table – you can even write names on the pots to personalise.
Recycled Christmas card bunting
Deck the halls with bunting made from last year’s Christmas cards. Cut small squares out of your cards and fold in half over some string to create a triangle, then secure with a dab of glue. Add as many triangles as you want along the string, then hang up to add some festive cheer.
DIY snowflakes
It’s an oldie, but a goodie – cut-out paper snowflakes. You may remember this folded paper craft from school. But in case you’d forgotten, this walk-through by Make it Do should help you figure it out. You can hang these DIY snowflakes on your Christmas tree or make a garland to string up around the house.
Paper Christmas tree
If you’ve got some old books, newspapers or even junk mail lying around, why not turn them into a chic little Christmas tree. Layer up the paper, in smaller and smaller squares until you’ve got a tree the size you desire. Full instructions can be found at DumpADay.
8-bit baubles
For the nerdy among you, why not make 8-bit baubles. Cut your baubles out of foam board and paint (a similar effect can also be achieved painting on scrap cardboard). Check out the full tutorial from Our Nerd Home.
Origami Christmas
Old paper is great for origami. You can create bows to decorate your tree, hang on the wall or finish off the present wrapping. Or you could try folding a 3D Christmas tree card that’s sure to make the recipient smile.
Toilet roll wreath
Toilet rolls may be harder to come by in lockdown (for some weird reason), but as long as you’ve got some of the cardboard tubes (kitchen roll tubes work too), this craft by Meaningful Mama is a great one. When finished you’ll have a gorgeous wreath to hang above the fireplace or on the front door.
